A worried mind is a confident storyteller. It says 'I will fail the presentation' or 'they must be upset with me' as though it were fact. In cognitive behavioural therapy, a thought is treated as a guess to be checked, not a verdict. You look at the evidence for the thought, the evidence against it, and what you might say to a friend in the same spot. The aim is not to think happy thoughts. It is to find a more balanced view that you can believe. Many people find that writing a thought down makes it smaller and easier to examine. Pick something moderate today, not your biggest fear.
