Quieting health worries

Day 4 of 7

When anxiety feels like illness

Anxiety itself can cause real physical feelings: a racing heartbeat, headaches, a tight chest, an upset stomach. The NHS points out that these can be mistaken for signs of illness. The feelings are real. The cause may be anxiety, though only a doctor can tell you which. This is why a slow, kind attention to the body can help. Today, move through your body without hunting for a problem. Notice sensations, name them as simply as you can, and let them be. Treat it as listening, not inspecting. If something new or strange shows up, that is a reason to see a doctor, not to scan harder.

Practice

Do a slow body scan, then breathe out long and slow.

This program does not replace medical care. Any new, changing or worrying physical symptom needs to be seen by a doctor first, even if you think it might be anxiety. If health worries are taking over your day, work, sleep or money, please talk to a doctor, psychiatrist or clinical psychologist. If you have thoughts of ending your life, call Tele MANAS on 14416 or 112 now.
