Start small

Day 5 of 7

Kindness after stalling

About 8 min

You will stall again. Many people do. What matters is what happens next. In one study of 134 first-year students, those who forgave themselves for procrastinating before a first exam were less likely to put things off before the second. It was a small study and cannot prove cause, but it fits the idea that shame is a poor motivator. Harsh self-criticism usually makes starting harder, not easier. Today, answer the inner critic the way you would answer a friend. Then look at the thought 'I always fail' and ask whether that is really the whole picture.

Practice
