Lift the low

Day 4 of 7

A kinder inner voice

About 8 min

When we feel low, the inner voice often turns harsh: 'I am useless, I should be doing more.' Self-compassion is the practice of answering that voice the way you would answer someone you love. It has three parts: noticing that you are struggling, remembering that many people struggle too, and offering yourself some warmth. Research suggests self-compassion may help people cope better, and it does not make you lazy. Many find it feels awkward at first. Try the exercise anyway, and be patient. Even a flat, mumbled kind sentence counts. You are practising a new habit of speaking, not performing a feeling.
