Unwind from stress

Day 5 of 7

Family and expectations

Family can be both our greatest support and our heaviest weight. Expectations about career, marriage, money or duty can sit in our minds as loud rules: 'I should always be available.' Stepping back from a thought like that, noticing it as a thought rather than a command, can loosen it. It does not mean the people you love do not matter. It means you can care and still not be run by every 'should'. Many people find that speaking to themselves kindly makes hard conversations easier. Today, try both skills: unhook from one stressful thought, then offer yourself the kind words you would offer a friend.

Practice

Step back from one 'should' thought, then say kind words to yourself.
